Loosing is not an option
Water is an essential resource. Studies indicate that more than 1.1 billion people lack ac.cess to water, with 2.7 billion experiencing water scarcity at least one month a year. Governments place a high priority on delivering adequate water supplies, but water stocks safe for drinking are depleting fast. Water usage has increased six times in the past 100 years, and will double again by 2050.
On average it takes 5 kWh of energy to heat 100 liters of water. Of course CO2 emissions per kWh may vary greatly in accordance with the amount of clean energy in the energy supply. But if we calculate according to EPA’s eGRID emission factors, 1 kWh of on average emits 592 grammes of CO2. For our example company this will mean a reduced carbon footprint of 14-20 tonnes of CO2. Since a mid-size car emits an average of 3.8 tonnes of CO2 per year, this equates to the emissions of 3.6 – 5.2 cars driven on gasoline a whole year.
Half of humanity now live in cities and, within two decades, nearly 60% of the world’s population will be urban dwellers. Urban growth is most rapid in the developing world, where cities gain an average of 5 million residents every month. In Africa and Asia, the urban population will double between 2000 and 2030.
The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks 2015 Report listed water crises as the highest impact global risk.
